earthstory:

Aerial totality

When the moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, it eclipses the light from our solar orb and plunging the into an eerie night. They can be partial, annular or total, depending on the interaction of the orbits. I have never viewed this phenomenon, but this wonderful picture taken from an airplane provides a view quite out of the ordinary. Following the eclipse from a plane ensures freedom from the vagaries of clouds and can give a longer experience of totality.

Speed Demon
The shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) is often regarded as one of the fastest sharks alive today.
This shark is like a high-performance sports car, with specs that include increased gill surface area for better respiration, the ability to conserve metabolic heat, higher blood oxygen carrying capacity, and a re-positioned aerobic red muscle that powers sustained swimming.
These characteristics are also shared by its larger cousin—the great white.

Author John Scalzi was on a roll this morning (currently 7:14 AM, 26 Sept. 2014) with a tweet he found from some guy sending out an “ultimatum” to women to “make a choice” between feminism and, well, men like him. So Scalzi launched into a truly magnificent set of scorchers, which I’m posting here for the delectation of people everywhere.

Also: I would like to thank that guy for setting the ultimatum. It makes finding a boyfriend so much easier when the undesirable ones wear a placard identifying themselves.
